Misconceptions, myths & statics x
"Those who are poor, are poor because they want"

Poverty is a complex reality. It is rooted in structural barriers, systemic inequalities, injustice, inequity, and exclusion. Poverty is generational, and many people who live in poverty were born into it, born into the lack of access to health care, education, nutrition, employment, and more.

"Everyone has the same opportunities"

Actually, children born into or experiencing poverty start their lives with a high risk of developing physical, social, emotional, health, and behavioral issues due to lack of nutrition, physical stimulation, or emotional development.

"Only homeless are actually poor"

Poverty is more than being homeless, unemployed, having low living standards, or having a low income. Poverty is a complicated issue. This can mean deprivation, malnutrition, poor sanitation, a lack of access to safe drinking water, education, health care, and other social services.

Behind a silent voice,there is a story x
Juan Ernesto (provisional name; he asked for his name and face not to be shown) is an elderly man who lives in the Satélite settlement. He is a solitary man with no connection to his immediate family, though he has a moderate relationship with his neighbors, who are going through a similar situation. Mr. Ernesto works in the fields with a few friends he has made over time. He only completed primary school, due to having many siblings in his family. He says he spent most of his life in the field; it's all he knows. His family used to live in San Roque de Cumbaza, but they moved to Tarapoto because they wanted to settle in the city.

He says things sometimes get difficult for him. Earning no more than 850 soles, for the physical effort he has made his whole life, the pain takes its toll. He can't imagine the luxury of not working because, in his own words, "No puedo hija, si no trabajo mañana, no como nunca" (“I can’t little one, if I don’t work tomorrow, I would never eat”).

We asked him a little about the popular opinion regarding people in his situation. Mr. Ernesto said that it frustrated him a lot that people perceive those in his situation as lazy, addicted, or irresponsible. He has worked all his life and knows more than anyone who says that no one is poor because they want to be. “No saben nada, nada, me parto el lomo trabajando desde que tengo 16 y sigo igual, no saben nada” (“They don’t know anything, nothing, I work myself to death since I was 16 and still in the same, they don’t know anything”)
